CRES steps up close surveillance through New Year

BANGKOK, Nov 5 - The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday ordered security concerned agencies to step up close monitoring of activities as intelligence report indicated ill-intended groups are planning to cause disturbances during the period.

CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd revealed the information after the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) reported to the centre's meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, that some groups are attempting to stir chaos in many areas which are packed with crowds.

The NIA also confirmed possible assassination attempts against the country's key figures.

"The CRES resolved that all concerned-agencies including the NIA, the National Security Council, police and army must together monitor suspected groups to prevent any untoward incidents," said Col Sansern.

"The monitoring measures will be implemented from today through the New Year period."

As some people have reported the authorities over transportation of unusual large amount of chemicals, gas and fuel in some areas, Col Sansern said the CRES resolved that concerned agencies will seek cooperation from business operators to alert CRES in advance about any irregularities, so that the authorities can prevent any untoward incidents.

The NIA has reported to CRES that ill-intentioned people are intending to create disturbance in November and ask security concerned agencies to closely monitor the situation following the planned activities of the anti-government Red Shirt "United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

The intelligence agency urged parties concerned to be on alert on Nov 13 as it marks sixth month anniversary of the death of Red Shirt military strategist army Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, while Nov 19 will be the sixth month anniversary of the end of UDD protest at Ratchaprasong intersection.

The Thai capital and its surrounding provinces remain under a state of emergency. CRES however said it will initially only seek cooperation from the public in monitoring the situation as it did not want to strictly enforce the special law, but more stiff law enforcement will be applied to prevent any possible turbulence.
