RI FOREIGN MINISTER OFFERS CONCEPTS TO END VIOLENCE
Jakarta, July 31 (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda offered concepts from Indonesian perspective to end the violence in conflicts in his keynote address at the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) here Thursday.
In his written speech read out by director general for information and diplomacy of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Andri Hadi, the minister at first reviewed the background of the tension and conflicts in the world due to political and economic injustice, sectarian conficts triggered by lack of nation-building and acts of terrorism.
These conflicts happened in many parts of the world especially in Moslem countries, which had been in the media, he said, adding that this had led to a perception that Islam had caused chaos and destruction, as in the Bali bombings of October 12, 2002.
He summed up the three concepts to enhance the role of democracy, regular dialogues and to accept and promote multiple identities based on what Indonesia has done and achieved as a nation in the time of conflicts such as ending communal violence in Ambon and Poso, the two areas in eastern Indonesia, and starting dialogues that may lead a peace in Aceh.
At the conclusion of his speech, he said that it was both easy start a conflict as it was to develop it.
To achieve peace and unity in a country, it was also important to listen to the cries of the people. In this way social welfare will be enhanced while the national unity maintained, he said.
The speech was delivered in the first plenary session on the second day of the third ICIS themed upholding Islam as Rahmadan Lil 'Alamin (blessing for the universe): Peace Building and Conflict Prevention in the Muslim World.
