ISLAMIC SCHOLARS SUGGEST RELIGIOUS TEACHINGS TO PREVENT CONFLICTS

Jakarta, July 31 (ANTARA) - Indonesian scholar and former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Alwi Shihab said that religious approaches be effective in relieving tensions and conflicts among several Gulf and Arab countries.

Speaking at the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) at Hotel Borobudur here Thursday, Alwi urged moslems to help their brothers and sisters reach unity to bring about peace and prosperity for the moslems across the world on the basis of Islamic teachings.

"If religions and religious teachings cannot be relied upon to end gross economic, legal, educational, health and housing disparities, moslems can never hope for peace, speak for peace, and even bother to pray for peace," he said.

He added that it is a fact conflicts in several moslem countries were actually not triggered by religious factors, but rather by the lack of patience, dialogues and understanding between the conflicting parties.

On the same occasion, Pakistani's scholar Prof Abdul Rashid, Chairman of Global Network for the Promotion of Tolerance (GNPT) said that the Qur'an taught universal tolerance.

"This is a reminder that unity in diversity is quite," he said, adding that Islamic teachings on tolerance and brotherhood form a strong basis for making peace and prevent conflicts.

ICIS III is an international meeting which brought together Islamic scholars from around the world to discuss the roots of conflicts in Islamic countries and seek a solution.

"The meeting is also aimed at smoothening the process of preventing or solving conflicts through the religious ways bringing together ulemas and moslem scholars from around the world to discuss and recommend solutions to conflicts in Islamic countries," said KH Hasyim Muzadi, the executive board chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama,Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization.
