TAT, Thai private sector in Japan aim to attract one million Japanese tourists

TOKYO, Sept 24 -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and representatives of ten Thai companies are participating in Japan's tourism promotion fair in order to build confidence in traveling to Thailand and attracting at least one million Japanese tourists to make the journey.

TAT deputy governor for International Marketing (Asia and South Pacific), Sansern Ngaorungsi, said his organisation and the Thai private sector are joining the JATA World Tourism Congress & Travel Fair 2010, held by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) in Tokyo Friday through Sunday.

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa also joined the fair's opening ceremony.

Mr Sansern said the number of Japanese tourists visiting Thailand in this year's second quarter has fallen around 14 per cent year-on-year due to Thailand's political unrest in April-May, causing the Japanese government to prohibit its citizens from entering the kingdom.

According to TAT's estimate of the Japanese market, the tourist numbers in the third quarter will continue to drop although the situation in Thailand has returned to normal.

Mr Sansern said TAT has met with JATA officers in order to exchange ideas and promote the two countries' tourism. Thailand has also asked Japan to promote its tourism among Japanese travellers by expanding its cooperation with that country's travel agents and by organising campaigns, offering tour packages to Thailand.

In order to maintain the number of Japanese tourists to Thailand by as many as one million as with last year, the cooperation includes a survey on goods and services on tourism in Thailand.

Around 30 per cent of the one-million tourists are from southern Japan or the capital Tokyo, which is considered as the main marketing area. (MCOT online news)
