Thai PM leaves Wednesday for UN General Assembly in New York

BANGKOK, Sept 21 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is scheduled to leave the kingdom Wednesday to attend the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the ASEAN-US Summit in New York.

Mr Abhisit will lead the Thai delegation including Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, president of Thailand Trade Representatives Kiat Sittheeamorn to New York City Wednesday to attend the General Assembly where leaders of 192 countries are expected to attend the annual session Thursday morning.

A prominent agenda of the 65th General Assembly is a high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as heads of states will convene to speed progress towards reaching the goals by their 2015 target date. The goals include reducing poverty, combating disease, fighting hunger, protecting the environment and boosting education.

Mr Abhisit is also scheduled to meet American investors and business participants from the US-ASEAN Business Council Thursday afternoon to boost investor confidence and inform them about the continued economic recovery of the kingdom.

The prime minister will also address doubts regarding the Map Ta Phut industrial estate, the suspended third generation wireless service bidding and the Thai-Cambbodian border dispute.
He will clarify the government's policies in handling the issues and the Thai judicial justice process.

For the second ASEAN-US Summit scheduled on Friday, the Thai premier will discuss the necessity and roles of the United States in the Southeast Asian region. The establishment of regional security, the ease of protectionism and the boosting of strategic partners between both parties will also be raised during the summit being held on the sidelines of the UN assembly.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Thai premier will also hold bilateral talks with the Slovenian prime minister and the Sri Lankan president, respectively, as well as meet Thais living in New York and be interviewed by US media such as CNN international and CNBC.

Mr Abhisit is scheduled to arive Suvarnabhumi Airport Sunday morning. (MCOT online news)
