Protesters parade in North; Activist leaders phoning in

CHIANG MAI, Sept 19 -- More than 1,000 anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters paraded Sunday in Chiang Mai and mocked the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva under the watchful eyes of the police.

UDD protesters, supporters of fugitive, ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, held political activities to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the coup which ousted Mr Thaksin from power on September 19, 2006.

UDD supporters on foot, motorcycle and cars first marched from the stadium in Chiang Mai and ended up at the Sam Kasat monument. During the journey they mocked the government demanding the release of political prisoners among other activities.

They are scheduled to return to the provincial stadium tonight as a platform was erected for UDD leaders and members of the opposition Puea Thai Party to deliver speeches.

Among those who plan to give speeches are former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, brother-in-law of Mr Thaksin, Puea Thai Party MP and also UDD leader Jatuporn Prompan, singer activist Arisman Pongruangrong and Chakrapob Penkair.

Police have issued arrest warrants for the latter two and they plan to phone in during the gathering.

In nearby Lampang province, police have been posted at several residences owned by important persons including the provincial governor and judges. UDD supporters plan to go to Chiang Mai and join their colleagues there.

A similar procession was held in the eastern province of Rayong when UDD supporters tried to tie strips of red cloth on the fence of the provincial hall but were prevented by police. The situation calmed after more than 100 police and civil service workers told them to tie the red cloth on nearby iron barriers instead.

No violence was reported during the gatherings. (MCOT online news)
