Household debt problems on the rise, says NESDB

BANGKOK, Sept 2 – Household debt problems are increasing although the number of households burdened with debt has dropped, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

NESDB Deputy Secretary-General Suwanee Khamman revealed that household debt in 2009 totaled Bt134.69 billion, up 7.4 per cent year on year, though the portion of debt-ridden households had deceased to only 60.9 per cent.

However, debts incurred by production workers rose 15.6 per cent while their incomes increased only 3.8 per cent, indicating that repayment prospects had dropped.

Of the total debts, 82.4 per cent are official, 7.9 per cent are unofficial, and 9.7 per cent are both official and unofficial. Official debts per household are Bt127,715 and unofficial debts per household are Bt6,984.

She said a group of low-income earners had higher unofficial debts than that of high-income earners, but the high-income earners had more problems in debt settlement.

Problems debtors in the unofficial segment are facing include high debt burdens and physical attack threats.

In addition, Mrs Suwanee said debtors in the official segment experienced unfair treatments in loan and mortgage contracts, assets sale at a low price, and higher-than-usual interest charge in case of default.

To reduce the problems, she suggested people and the society need to build habit of saving, behave nmore modestly, and spend appropriately. (MCOT online news)
