Iran president urges greater interaction among Mideast states
TEHRAN, Aug. 21 (MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for greater interaction among countries in the Middle East.
He made the remark in a meeting with Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, the prime minister and minister of foreign affairs of Qatar, on Thursday.
“Brotherly mutual ties and cooperation between Tehran and Doha is improving day by day, and the officials of the two countries are taking steps forward for further promote these ties,” Ahmadinejad stated.
“Surely, such relations are not only to the interest of the two states but also the interests of the Middle East and the Islamic world in general,” Ahmadinejad added.
The president emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran defends the territorial integrity and independence of the countries in the Middle East, particularly the littoral states of the Persian Gulf.
Ahmadinejad went on to say that “regional problems should be resolved in a brotherly atmosphere.”
He praised Qatar’s stand toward the Palestine issue, saying, “The extraordinary summit in support of Gaza was a historical event.”
The president also said Tehran believes that peace talks over Palestine are “fruitless”. He added that the blockade on Gaza “should be ended immediately.”
For his part, the Qatari prime minister said, “Qatar-Iran ties are not based on short-term interests.”
The prime minister said interactions between Tehran and Manama have grown considerably and Qatar has proven its good faith in practice as far as Iran is concerned.
Sheikh Jabr Al-Thani also said Qatar believes that Iran’s nuclear technology poses no threat to the region, adding that Iran, as a strong country, would consider the interests of the countries in the region.
The West’s policy towards Iran has ended in failure and the Western countries are well aware of this, he noted.
Qatar’s prime minister also met with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili on Friday.
During the meeting Jalili stated that Iran’s persistence on its nuclear position will set an example for protecting the rights of all independent countries.
Jalili also called for serious actions to lift the Gaza blockade.
Sheikh Jabr Al-Thani also commented on the significant role of Iran in maintaining security in the Middle East.
He also called for more effective actions to put an end to the tragic living conditions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
