INT'L CONFERENCE OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARS TO HOLD THIRD MEETING IN JAKARTA
Jakarta, July 25 (ANTARA) - The International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) will hold its third meeting in Jakarta July 29 to August 1, 2008 at the Borobudur Hotel, a spokesman for the event's organizers said.
"At this meeting, Moslem leaders and experts on Islam from around the world will discuss global matters, especially conflicts in Islamic countries and their resolution," said KH Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of the central executive board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the organizer of the biennial meeting at a press conference here Friday.
"This year's meeting will take the theme 'Uphold Islam as Rahmatan Lil Alamin: Peace and Conflict Prevention in the Muslim World'", Muzadi said.
He said the meeting would discuss the roots of the conflicts in Islamic countries, and try to form common perceptions about the problems and their resolution or prevention.
"Some conflict resolution plans never become reality because of differences in assumptions on the conflict-torn countries with each party holding on to its own beliefs and refusing to engage in negotiations," he said.
Achieving unity in concepts was one step toward the resolution of a conflict or the conclusion of a peace treaty between the conflicting parties, he said.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said dialogues among Islamic countries would help picture Islam as a blessing for the universe (Rahmatan lilalamin) and correct the misconceptions among western people that Islam is a terrorist religion.
"The world has misunderstood Islam because of the terrorism issue. Therefore, this meeting is very important to show the world that Islam is a peaceful religion and wants to help create a more peaceful world," said the minister.
He said the meeting could be considered as a second-line diplomatic effort by Indonesia to help create world peace as called for in its state ideology.
The third ICIS will be participated in by 350 delegates from 60 countries, including Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan, the Philippines and Thailand.
