Foreign investors renewing confidence in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 29 – Foreign tourists have begun to return to have sufficient confidence to invest in Thailand as can be witnessed by the increasing number of tourists since last year, according to Deputy Government Spokesman Watchara Kannikar.

Mr Watchara said the Tourism and Sports Ministry reported to the Cabinet that some 7,500,000 foreign tourists arrived in Thailand from January through June 2010.

Of this, 3.6 million were East Asian tourists or nearly 49 per cent of all foreign tourists, followed by visitors from Europe, South Asia and America.

Despite political turmoil and disorder, foreign arrivals increased by 13.7 per cent, reflecting that more tourists are confident regarding Thailand. In particular, those from Asia and Europe reached 79.18 per cent of total tourist arrivals. It is expected revenue earned from tourism this year would reach Bt272 billion.

The number of tourists in May dropped by 12.93 per cent year on year, due to the political violence in March through May this year, but the number decreased by only 1.14 per cent in June.

The ability of the tourism sector to rebound showed confidence among foreign tourists had recovered in just one month after the political riots ended.

The ministry projects that the number of tourists in 2010 will reach 15.34 million because of the substantial growth rate in the first quarter of this year.

With the tourism stimulus scheme in place, the ministry believes more foreign tourists will travel to Thailand. (MCOT online news)
