Thai Health Ministry ups healthcare, sanitary standards in Andaman coastal provinces

PHUKET, July 25 – Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has set up a project to improve healthcare and sanitary standards in five Andaman coastal provinces with a budget of Bt11 million (over US$3.3 million), aiming to build tourist confidence in the public health standard.

Following visits in the southern provinces of Phuket and Krabi, Deputy Public Health Minister Panasiri Kulanatsiri said Sunday that the ministry policy is to improve health services standards, surveillance and protection in the Andaman coastal zone.

The five Andaman coastal provinces-- including Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi and Trang-- are among the world’s best-known for beautiful white sandy beaches with crystal clear sea water and have the potential to be the tourism hub of Asia.

In 2006, Thailand earned some Bt100 billion (over $3 billion) from tourism in the region, calculating 20 per cent of the country’s overall tourism income and 83 per cent of overall tourism income in the southern region, Ms Panasiri said.

Public health authorities began providing the financial support, worth Bt11 million (over $3.3 million) to raise health standard, in June 2010-2011 in an attempt to boost confidence among international tourists in Thai healthcare.

The measures focused on improving both public health centres and specialised hospitals to meet international standards.

The ministry intends to make the five provinces a disease-free zone and contain seven diseases affecting the tourism, including rabies, malaria, dengue, Leptospirosis disease, cholera, food poisoning, and legionnaires disease.

Ms Panasiri explained that the appropriate agencies will control food safety and hygiene to be free from contaminants.

Improvements in the environmental condition at the tourist sites, particularly hygienic restrooms, and environmentally friendly waste disposal processes, will be part of the upgrade, the deputy minister added. (MCOT online news)
