Taiwanese firm's afforestation project helps local people

Hanoi (VNA) - The living conditions of many households in Quang Soncommune of northern coastal Quang Ninh province have considerably improved thanks to their involvement in an afforestation project launched by Taiwan 's InnovGreen Corp, Ltd.

InnovGreen Corp, Ltd. , an affiliate of Taiwan 's Trend Micro Group, has implemented a project to plant 200 ha of eucalyptus in Quang Son commune since 2007. The project has generated regular jobs for more than 100 localpeople, even 200 people at times.

Chairman of the communal People's Committee Phun Quay On said that 61 percent of the total 500 households in the commune are poor and they live mainly on agro-forestry production. Although forestry is considered an economic spearhead, the lack of capital and advanced technologies havecontributed to the poor efficiency of forestry production.

With imported high-quality urophylla grandis eucalyptus seeds and capital investment, InnovGreen project has generated higher income, up to twice orthree folds, for local people and promised better results for businesses.

"I have bought a motorbike and some household utensils with the money I got from forest plantation and care," revealed Dang Nhat Phu, a resident ofQuang Son commune.

Beginning with the first afforestation project in central Thanh Hoa province in 2005, InnovGreen needled similar projects in the northern provinces of Lang Son and Quang Ninh and the central provinces of Nghe An, Kon Tum and Quang Nam with a total capital of 295 million USD on a totalarea of 350,000 ha of land.

Head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Forestry Department Nguyen Ngoc Binh said that InnovGreen is among the small numberof foreign businesses that has pioneered in the country's afforestation.

"The Vietnamese Government always encourages and facilitates investors'implementation of the country's forestry development policy," he asserted.

During a Vietnam visit in June, Steve Chang, a member of Trend Micro Group's Boards of Directors, said that Vietnam is capable of developing the forestry sector for the sake of timber exploitation and processingindustry.

The Taiwanese firm is now expanding forests on another 15,000 ha in Quang Ninh province with a view to improving local people's life and raising the country's forest coverage rate besides creating a source of materials for the timber industry.-Enditem
