Turkish FM urges implementation of Tehran Declaration

Ankara, July 14, IRNA – Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu here on Tuesday called for implementation of the Tehran Declaration.

Known as the Tehran Declaration, the agreement was signed on May 17 by senior officials of Iran, Brazil and Turkey on the sidelines of the G15 summit meeting in Tehran.

Based on the agreement, Tehran accepted to send 1,200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for a total of 120 kilograms of highly-enriched uranium which will be used as nuclear fuel for the country’s medical research reactor.

Talking to reporters, the Turkish FM rejected claims that Ankara had refused to get involved in Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

He added that the issue was not discussed during his telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Certain foreign news agencies had quoted an unnamed US official as saying that Ms Clinton had called on Turkey not to get involved in Iran’s nuclear issue and that Davutoglu had accepted the request.

Davutoglu reiterated that Iran’s peaceful nuclear program will continue with participation of Turkey and that Ankara insisted on materialization of the Tehran Declaration.

Turkey insists on a diplomatic solution in the row with Iran, arguing that a nuclear fuel swap deal it brokered with Brazil in May should be the basis of fresh talks with the Islamic Republic./end
