'Increasing Taliban influence in Pak may end honeymoon in J-K'

Dharam Shourie New York, Jul 21 (PTI) Pakistan's "non-governance" due to differences between ruling P.P.P. and its key coalition partner P.M.L.-N. was increasing the influence of the Taliban which could end "honeymoon" of peace in Jammu and Kashmir, former U.S. envoy to the India, Frank G. Wisner, has warned.

Although the Kashmir issue had never been resolved, the"honeymoon" was continuing for several years, he said.

However, now differences between Pakistan's ruling P.P.P.

leader Asif Ali Zardari and P.M.L.-N. chief Nawaz Sharif has led to "non governance" of Pakistan which is increasing influence of Taliban and that could create problem in Jammuand Kashmir, he said.

Sharif's party mainly differs with P.P.P. on the issue of reinstatement of judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf during the emergency rule last year. It pulled its nine ministers from the P.P.P.-led Cabinet in May after failing tomeet two-self-imposed deadlines to restore the sacked judges.

Added to the "non-governance" of Pakistan is the uncertain political situation in Jammu and Kashmir itself following resignation Chief Minster Ghulam Nabi Azad, Wisner told the Golden Jubilee Conference of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, being attended by about 800 alumni nowworking or owning about 325 organisations.

Wisner, who covered a range subject in his 40-minute speech, also stressed on the necessity to ensure that Doharound of the trade negotiations is successfully completed.

Conceding that issues like agricultural subsidies by the industrialised countries and opening up of markets by the developing nations are very contentious, he said India and the U.S. have a major role to play to ensure the success whichwould benefit both the rich and the poor.

Advocating free trade, Wisner agreed that it could have impact on the job markets which could prove to be unpopular in the countries which lose them. The answer is not protectionismbut dealing with the consequences of the free trade, he added.

In this context, he said it is the duty of those who support free trade to identify the problems created by it and find solution to rectify them which would include retraining of the workers who have lost jobs, social security and ensuring healthcare benefits. But in the long run, free tradewould prove beneficial for all.

Stating that the Indo-American friendship and cooperation has become irreversible, Wisner stressed on the need to develop relationship which, he said, takes longer to bearfruits but goes far beyond partnership.

Addressing the meeting, Chairman of Board of Directors JP MorganChase spoke about his experiences and had some words ofadvice for the young graduates as also CEOs.

He urged the young graduates to work hard and honestly towards whatever goals they set. But they also need to ensurethat they are able to give sufficient time to their families.
