Head of Executive Committee of UNHCR due in Yemen on Monday

SANA'A, July 04 (Saba) -
Head of the Executive Committee of the UNHCR's Programme, ambassador Peter Woolcott
is
to start on Monday a visit to Yemen to get acquainted with the situation of refugees
and displaced people due to the insurgency war.
Speaking to Saba, the UNHCR's representative in Yemen Claire Bourgeois pointed out
that Woolcott would meet during his six-day visit a number of officials in the
government
and local authorities in the areas hosting refugees and displaced persons to discuss
with them way to move forward with the projects implemented in this aspect.
"This visit is very important, as it will catch the attention of key actors to
consider the situation of refugees and displaced persons in this critical moment,
in which
Yemen faces many challenges and humanitarian needs", she said.
Bourgeois indicated that Woolcot would visit the government registration center of
refugees in Sana'a, where Somali refugees are being registered and given official
cards,
which is the first registration center opened in March 2009, and since then it has
recorded more than 24 thousand refugees.
The Woolcot's visit would also include Kharaz Camp, Lahj province, which hosts 14
thousand refugees, mostly Somalis, and then al-Basateen (the gardens) in urban
areas in
Aden province, where 40 thousand refugees live, including 15 Somali refugees , as
well as the province of Hajjah to get acquainted with the situation of displaced
people
and their needs.
