Japan's NICT Develops Pop-Up 3D Tech

Tokyo, July 1 (Jiji Press)--Japan's National Institute of
Information and Communications Technology said Thursday it has developed technology that creates three-dimensional images on a flat surface that can be seen without special glasses.

The technology will enable 360-degree 3D viewing, allowing multiple
viewers around a table-like display to watch stereoscopic images, the NICT
said.
Using a special circular cone-shaped optical element made of
acrylic and 96 small projectors in an experiment, NICT researchers
successfully created 3D images of a toy car and duck that were able to be
viewed 120 degrees around the display.
From now on, the institute will enlarge the system to achieve
360-degree viewing of larger images. It also plans to conduct testing on 3D
video in the autumn.
"If we can make the images clearer and the system bigger, we would
be able to show a stadium in 3D," project group member Shunsuke Yoshida
said.
