Thailand coordinates with Malaysia on border drug suppression

SONGKHLA, June 22 (TNA) – Thailand’s committee working on drug suppression in the southern border provinces on Tuesday said it is now coordinating with Malaysian officials to tighten measures against land and sea transport of illicit drugs.

Maj-Gen Preecha Plaiyuwong, chief of the committee working on drug suppression in the South, reported that Thai authorities arrested three members of a major syndicate belonging to drug kingpin Usman Salaemang in the southern region.

During the past three months, drug suppression officials seized 224,000 methamphetamine pills, six kilograms of crystal methamphetamine ‘ice,’ 32,600 bottles of an illegal cough syrup concoction and 202 kilograms of cannabis. Assets worth Bt100 million (some US$3 million) were also confiscated.

Dr Porntip Rojanasunan, committee member and director of Central Institute of Forensic Science, said the regional insurgencies are related to the drug rings and the human trafficking syndicates. She believed that the regional unrest and crimes will not subside if the authorities cannot cut the insurgents’ financial supports through illegal means.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj-Gen Putthichat Ekkachan, commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Region 4, said that police are monitoring the movement of drug dealers who transported cannabis, in particular the route from the Northeast to the South before delivering the narcotics to customers in the neighbouring country of Malaysia.

As Malaysian authorities successfully eliminated drug trafficking and seized about one thousand kilograms of cannabis a year, the Thai committee therefore is coordinating with its officials to join efforts to suppress the land and sea shipment of drugs. (TNA)
