Yemen reiterates commitment to protect child rights

NEW YORK, June 18 (Saba) - Yemen has renewed its commitment to protect and enhance children rights in various areas.

The statement was made by Yemen's permanent representative Abdullah al-Sayidi in an
open discussion in the United Nations Security Council (SC) on children and armed
conflicts
held in Thursday.
"Yemen was one of the first countries that have joined to the Convention on the
Rights of the Child in May 1991 and its two optional protocols", al-Sayidi said.
He added that Yemen has ratified a number of related international agreements in
addition to issuing some child-related legislations, topped by child rights law No.
45 in
2002 and juvenile protection law No. 24 for 1992.
He made clear that Yemen has established the Supreme Council of Motherhood and
Childhood and the Ministry of Human Rights as well as departments in several
ministries and
bodies that pay more attention to the children's rights.
Furthermore, the government's strategies, programs and development plans since
1990s have tackled numerous issues of children, he said.
Concerning impacts of rebellion conflict in Sa'ada province on children, al-Sayidi
accentuated that the government was keen on the safety of the citizens and remained
vigilant
in its confrontations with the rebels to avoid civilian casualties, particularly
children.
In spite of its limited resources, Yemen has carried out its duties towards its
citizens affected by the conflict. In cooperation with interested organizations, it
presented
humanitarian assistance to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and provide them
an access to the IDPs camps.
"The overwhelming concern of the government currently is to bring peace back and
reconstruct the conflict-affected area and return the IDPs, including children, to
their
homes", al-Sayidi said.
He asserted that Yemen intends to pay more attention to the children issues in its
future development programs and reconstruction plan in Sa'ada, calling on the
international
community to sustain the government's efforts in this regard.
Yemen's representative in UN concluded his speech by emphasizing the necessity of
putting an end to the nonstop violations against children in the occupied
Palestine, calling
on the international community to assume its responsibilities to end the occupation
on Palestine.
