JETRO asks Thailand to solve Map Ta Phut industrial project regulation problem

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has asked the Thai government to accelerate resolving the problem of the suspended industrial projects at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in the eastern seaboard.

JETRO's Bangkok president Munenori Yamada met Thai Industry Minister Chaiwut Bannawat to discuss trade, investment and building confidence in investment in Thailand as Japan has the biggest investments in Thailand and is ready to continue to expand its investment.

The minister said JETRO asked the ministry and the government to speed up dealing with the problem of the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate industrial projects suspended by the court for environmental concerns.

The minister said the latest development is the establishment of an independent panel, a sub-committee and four-party committee to solve the problem which should be eased soon. The ministry also laid out plans for new investment projects. JETRO also asked for assistance to Japanese investors affected by the recent anti-government protest in Bangkok. The Thai government has already had assistance measures to business operators.

JETRO will also provide human resource development for Thailand. The Industry Ministry’s Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion will cooperate with JETRO to hold the 2nd JTEPA Sub-Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to discuss help to the sector to access capital sources and develop regional SME Service Centers and an SME university.

The ministry and JETRO earlier cooperated under the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA) to promote Thai restaurant businesses overseas, develop the steel and textile industries, setting up an institute to develop human resources in the auto industry and the environment, and an environmental and energy conservation project, value added economic project and government and private sector partnership project.

Mr Chaiwut said Thailand and Japan have cooperation in trade and investment effectively through several projects but Automotive Human Resource Development Project (AHRDP) has yet been carried out after the agreement signing and the two sides are still discuss details of the project plan which will be talked again during a Thai-Japan Task Force meeting on July 7.
