Monga to be eradicated from Rangpur area once for all: General Moeen

RANGPUR, Bangladesh, July 17 (BSS)- Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed said here today that Monga would be eradicated once for all from Rangpur area through exploration and proper utilization of the huge local resources, economic potentials and strengths of
the people.

He emphasised the need for successful implementations of the
Army-assisted ongoing fisheries project in the main canal of the
Teesta Barrage Project (TBP), farming of the short duration BRRI
Dhan-33 paddy and social forestation projects in the TBP canal.

Gen Moeen said this at a gathering of the beneficiary males
and females of the Army-assisted pisciculture project in the TBP
canal, newly launched social forest project by the canal side and
BRRI Dhan-33 growers at Moheshpur point of the canal in Sadar
upazila here today.

The gathering was organised under the `Pisciculture in the
Main Canal of the TBP and BRRI Dhan-33 Farming Project' under the
Army-assisted Comprehensive Monga Eradication Programmes in
greater Rangpur. Rangpur Area Commander and General Officer
Commanding of 66 Infantry Division Major General Syed Fatemy
Ahmed Roomy, Brigade Commander of 72 Infantry Division of the
Bangladesh Army Brigadier General GM Kamrul Islam, Brigadier
General Belal, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Hafiz Uddin
Bhuiyan, high military and civil officials were present.

On his arrival at village Moheshpur, Principal Scientific
Officer and Head of Rangpur Regional Station of Bangladesh Rice
Research Institute (BRRI) Dr Abdul Mazid briefed General Moeen on
farming of the BRRI Dhan-33 and its impact on Monga eradication
in the area.

Gen Moeen expressed his satisfaction on the huge success in
containing Monga through farming BRRI Dhan-33 last year and along
with the senior Army and civil officials planted seedlings of
BRRI Dhan-33 at the field of farmer Abdul Matin there.

Later, he released fish fries in the main canal of the TBP
and observed fishing of huge big-sized fishes cultivated in the
canal during the past one year period under direct assistances of
the Army and looked after by the canal side beneficiary poor men
and women.

Gen Moeen distributed cash money as share of the profits of
the pisciculture project in the TBP canal among the beneficiary
males and females and Guti urea among the farmers of the area,
who are cultivating BRRI Dhan-33 there.

Gen Moeen said that he came to know about the
huge potentials of the TBP canal for fish farming in 1999, also
took some initiatives but the idea could not be realised that
time.

"After the one-eleven changes, I instructed the GOC of 66
Infantry Division, they took pragmatic steps, released fish fries
in 119 km long main canal of the TBP in Rangpur, Nilphamari and
Dinajpur districts last year and in only nine months, such huge
big fishes are cultivated," Moeen said.

He also instructed for cultivating fishes in the secondary
and tertiary canals of the TBP from this season and asked the
officials concerned to positively bring all available water
bodies in greater Rangpur under pisciculture for making a
revolution in the sector.

"There is a protein deficiency in Rangpur area and proper
utilization of the water bodies and fish farming will not only
meet the protein demand of the area and its people, but the
produced fishes of the area will meet demand of the country,"
Moeen said.

"Why a country like Bangladesh imports fish, when there are
tremendous potentials for producing the same and even exporting
it abroad?" Moeen asked.

He urged people to cultivate BRRI Dhan-33 in more land to get
the harvest maximum by 120 days from the plantation date, which
is a minimum of 30 days ahead that that of traditional harvesting
period to contain the Monga.

The Army Chief also asked the farmers to take the advantage
of producing three crops in a land every year through subsequent
relay method farming of potato-Boro-wheat- mug-maize and paddy.

Gen Moeen also asked the people to make the tree plantation
project along side with the TBP canal, successful and turn it to
a green revolution by creating green belts to maintain ecology,
environment, and bio- diversity and combat Monga.

He suggested the concerned scientists to find out the perfect
trees and fruit trees that will grow better in the area to
produce the maximum quantity of fruits and timbers in shorter
period.
