Russia’s wrong approach to Iran will affect ties

TEHRAN, June 9 (MNA) -- Russia’s wrong approach toward Iran will affect relations between Tehran and Moscow, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

“Relations with countries are formulated based on historical records and strategic aspects, and principally the relations between two countries are established to serve their interests,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters at his weekly press briefing.

On an Israel’s recent attack against the Freedom Flotilla, Mehmanparast said that immediately after the incident, Iran initiated talks on the issue and called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to be held.

The meeting was held, the attack was condemned, and all the OIC member countries demanded that Israel end the siege of Gaza, he said.

They also demanded that Israel be tried for committing war crimes in Gaza, he added.

After the incident, Iran’s foreign minister phoned United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and asked the UN to seriously pursue the case, he added.

The UN secretary general condemned the attack and now the issue is on the agenda of the UN, he stated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast said Iran has rejected the possibility of an exchange of a detained Iranian nuclear scientist for three U.S. citizens detained in Iran.

“The three U.S. citizens had crossed Iran’s border illegally. It is not right to hold discussions about exchanging Iranian scholar Shahram Amiri, who went missing last year while he was on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, for the three U.S. hikers.”

He said the footage screened on Iranian television on Monday night confirmed that the nuclear scientist was kidnapped by the U.S. and Saudi intelligence agencies.

“The U.S. acts are inhumane and violate international law. We will definitely pursue Amiri’s case through legal and political channels,” he explained.

Mehmanparast also said an investigation into the case of the U.S. detainees is underway and the three U.S. citizens can have consular access through the Swiss Embassy in Tehran.

“They are held in the best conditions and can meet their families,” he added.

The three U.S. citizens were charged with espionage after Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi found evidence that they had actually been cooperating with a U.S. intelligence agency.

Iran will continue cooperation with IAEA

Mehmanparast also said that Iran will continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency like before.

He went on to say that Iran is ready to get the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty back on the correct path with the cooperation of other countries.

He stated that the U.S., which possesses the world’s most advanced nuclear arsenal, should take measures toward disarmament as soon as possible and added that IAEA inspectors should be allowed to visit the Zionist regime’s nuclear facilities as well.

On Brazil’s stance on a fourth United Nations resolution against Iran, Mehmanparast said Turkey and Brazil have taken many measures to support Iran so far.

He added that the UN Security Council is taking a hasty course of action that is influenced by the political inclinations of certain countries, especially the United States.
