Japan's Kan Names Cabinet



Tokyo, June 8 (Jiji Press)--Incoming Japanese Prime Minister Naoto
Kan named his cabinet Tuesday, replacing six of 17 previous ministers while
retaining the others.
Kan promoted Yoshihiko Noda, senior vice finance minister, to
finance minister.
Satoshi Arai, who served as adviser to outgoing Prime Minister
Yukio Hatoyama, was named national policy minister with additional
responsibilities for economic and fiscal policy and consumer affairs.
Masahiko Yamada was promoted to minister for agriculture, forestry
and fisheries after he served as senior vice minister in the Hatoyama
cabinet.
Kan named Koichiro Genba, new policy chief of his Democratic Party
of Japan, to double as minister for public servant system reform and
birthrate improvement under his cabinet.
Renho, a member of the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of
parliament, was named to replace Yoshito Sengoku, who was appointed chief
cabinet secretary.
Kan retained 11 ministers, including Foreign Minister Katsuya
Okada, Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa and transport minister Seiji
Maehara.
Kan is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday evening before
officially taking office at a ceremony at the Imperial Palace.
Before the announcement of the list of cabinet ministers, Kan and
Shizuka Kamei, head of the People's New Party, confirmed their two parties
will keep their coalition.
