Israeli attack on aid convoy, act of piracy: Indian Leader

New Delhi, June 7, IRNA – Denouncing the Israeli attack on aid convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, an Indian Leader Monday termed it “an act of piracy”.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA, Asif Mohd Khan, MLA, Delhi Assembly said: “The Israeli military’s killing of fifteen civilians and wounding of scores more on a ship carrying humanitarian supplies in international waters was an act of cold-blooded murder and a war crime.

He called on the United Nations “to shoulder his responsibilities to protect the safety of the solidarity groups who were on board these ships and to secure their way to Gaza, and pressurize Israel to lift the blockade of Gaza”. The aid convoy was a response to Israel’s barbaric blockade that has subjected an entire population of Gaza to hunger, disease and misery.

Criticizing US policies, Indian leader said that while issuing a hypocritical expression of “deep regret at the loss of life,” the Obama administration is doing everything it can to assure that Israel bears neither blame nor consequences for these killings. “Israel is able to carry out this kind of medieval siege as well as piracy and murder not merely because of its own military might, but thanks to the unwavering patronage and funding of Washington”, he added.

Asif, while condemning the heinous crime committed by Israel, extended sympathies to the families of the dead and wounded and expressed solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians and entire population of Gaza. Having fear that Israel’s actions could provoke a war in the Middle East, he urged UN and International bodies to immediately put tough sanctions on Israel until it stop crimes.

Appreciating Islamic Republic of Iran's efforts and moral support for the cause of Palestinian people, Indian Leader accused Arab World over their silence. He urged Arab countries to take a strong view of the aggression unleashed by the Israeli occupation forces on the Gaza which remains under tight Israeli siege for the last two years.

On the night of May 30, the Israeli armed forces illegally attacked a flotilla of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters. At least 15 international activists have been killed and many injured. About 700 activists from a number of countries are on the six ships. They were aiming to take 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been under relentless siege for almost three years now.

As reported, 16 months after Israel’s assault on Gaza in 2008-2009 that left 1,400 people dead, 50,000 homeless, much of the enclave’s infrastructure is in ruins. Gaza has for nearly three years been subject to a crippling blockade by Israel and Egypt that has wrecked its precarious economy, prevented reconstruction and rendered its people destitute./end
