Thai PM: Emergency decree remains in place to maintain order

HO CHI MINH CITY, June 6 (TNA) – The emergency decree in Thailand remains in place to help the Thai authorities maintain order, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) two weeks after a military operation ended weeks-long anti-government protests in Bangkok.

Mr Abhisit met ASEAN leaders as he attended the World Economic Forum in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday during his first trip overseas since the end of anti-government protests last month.

"We are back, stable and secure," he told the World Economic Forum on East Asia. “Thailand will "try to do our part in contributing to regional growth".

The Thai government returned the country to stability and will go ahead with its reconciliation plan and speed up implementation of measures to remedy the damage that has been done to the economy, Mr Ahisit told Klaus Schwab, World Economic Forum founder and executive chairman.

The emergency decree will remain in place for now, but the situation is calm and an election is possible early next year, Mr Abhisit told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting.

"I believe people understand that this is needed to assure that we can curb some of the actions of those who still want to resort to violence," he said.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva met his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung. The Vietnamese prime minister said he was glad that Thailand's political situation returned to normal and praised Thailand for its potential for trade and investment.

Vietnam wants to expand bilateral cooperation with Thailand, he said, stating that his country is ready to support Thailand’s economic growth to help boost the economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

A joint Thai and Vietnamese cabinet meeting is expected early next year and called for Thailand to support Vietnam’s registration of Hanoi’s old city gate as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Mr Abhisit said Thailand is ready to support the cooperative framework of ASEAN and Greater Mekong Subregion as well as Vietnam as ASEAN chair attending the G20 summit. Thailand will support the registration of Hanoi's Old City Gate as a World Heritage.

The situation in Thailand has returned to normal and the kingdom will continue trade and investment cooperation with Vietnam.

He spoke after a luncheon also attended by leaders of Laos, Vietnam,Myanmar and Cambodia that he could attend the gathering because the situation in Thailand was calm and the national reconciliation is set to start.

The Thai government parceled out more than US$370 million in the past five years in GMS development for energy and food security.

Transportation development including construction of the fourth bridge across the Mekong River in Thailand’s Chiang Rai and railway network linking Thailand and Laos will facilitate goods transportation.

Increasing competitive capacity, human resource and environment development will be achieved through cooperation by all sectors both small and big businesses.

We are trying to build link of basic structure to serve economic growth and be careful to sustain natural resources, Mr Abhisit said.

Thailand’s economic stimulus project will support the building of roads and railways to connect neighbouring countries in the Mekong subregion. (TNA)
