ITS OFFERS NOAA TO DEVELOP TSUNAMI-DECTECTION TECHNOLOGY

Surabaya, E Java, July 15 (ANTARA) - The Surabaya-based Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) is offering the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to cooperate in developing tsunami-detection technology.

ITS made the offer at a get-together on tsunami early warning system (TEWS) at its campus here on Tuesday, attended by a number of its experts and representatives from the East Java provincial administration, including spatial layout expert Prof Johan Silas.

"So far, most of the Indonesian people have a little knowledge of a tsunami early warning system (TEWS). That's why we are trying to familiarize them with TEWS through a campus," NOAA researcher David McKinnie said.

He said the local conmmunity's preparedness was the most important factor to face a tsunami.

"Without the community's preparedness, a tsunami-detection technology, tsunami warning system or tsunami forecast will be of no use," he said.

At the get-together, some participants asked about the technology developed by NOAA to detect a tsunami as early as possible. They said the existing TEWS in Indonesia was only able to detect a tsunami 15-20 minutes before it strikes.

"We keep on developing technology to detect a tsunami as early as possible. Actually, (the systems of) detecting a tsunami are different from one to another, depending on the earthquake's epicenter and magnitude in the sea," McKinnie said.
