RI DEPLORES EAST TIMOR VIOLENCE
Nusa Dua, July 15 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed his deepest sympathy over the gross human rights violation prior to and after the 1999 referendum in East Timor.
"We would like to express our sympathy over the past violence that have claimed lives and material losses," President Yudhoyono said after officially receiving the final report from the Commission for Truth and Friendship (CTF) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday.
The final report was submitted by CTF chairman from Indonesia, Benyamin Mangkoedilaga, to President Yudhoyono, Timor Leste President Ramos Horta, and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
On the occasion, President Yudhoyono the Indonesian government would study and follow up on the CTF's recommendation as soon as possible and then take a necessary initiative to improve the friendship among the people of Indonesia and Timor Leste.
Yudhoyono said CTF was responsible not only to run the mandate of the two countries but also to maintain and strengthen their relations.
"I believe that from this report the relations between the two countries will remain strong," Yudhoyono said, adding that the recommendation from the CTF was expected to rehabilitate the human rights victims collectively.
Meanwhile, Yudhoyono's Timor Leste counterpart Ramos Horta said the government of his country would soon analyze, discuss, and apply the CTF recommendation.
"We agree to apply the recommendation in the report if it is something possible," Horta said.
He added that the report could improve the spirit of mutual forgiveness in a bid to step up the relations between the two countries.
Earlier, CTF chairman from Timor Leste, Dionisio Babo Soares, said the principle objective of the Commission was not a judicial process to determine who was wrong and who was right.
"The finding, conclusion, and recommendation in the CTF final report are intended to cure an old wound, to improve reconciliation, and to strengthen relation and friendship and to ensure what has happened will not happen again in the future," Dionisio said.
After delivering their address, President Yudhoyono, President Horta, and Prime Minister Gusmao signed a joint statement containing among other things the deepest remorse over the gross human rights violation.
The two governments were also committed to implementing the recommendation seriously and maintaining the reconciliation among the people of the two countries.
