VP: ENTREPRENEURS MUST SACRIFICE FOR ENERGY RETRENCHMENT

Indramayu, W Java, July 13 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has appealed to entrepreneurs not to ask for more incentives when the joint decree of five ministers on energy retrenchment comes into force as of July 21.

"What other incentives we must give to them. Right now they have received up to a 50 percent discount," he said after inspecting the construction of the second unit of the Labuan steam power plant in Banten province and the first unit of the steam power plant PLTU Indramayu in West Java province on Sunday.

Citing an example, he said, entrerpreneurs had so far received discounted electricity tariffs by paying Rp630 per kWh to state electricity company PT PLN compared to the average tariff of Rp1,300 per kWh.

"Now is the time for them to sacrifice for the nation and state," he said.

On a possible change in work culture in connection with the planned switch in part of industries' weekly operation time to Saturdays and Sundays, the vice president said the work culture would not be affected.

"In fact, it (the switch in weekly operation time) will serve their interests. How can it change the work culture? Entrepreneurs must sacrifice for the nation and state," he said.

Industry Minister Fahmi Idris said last Friday industries in Java and Bali were expected to switch part of their weekly operation time to Saturdays and Sundays to make more efficient use of electriity amid a temporary reduction in the national power supply starting July 21.

He said the joint decree of five ministers on the switch would be signed this week.

On July 14, PT PLN and the Home Affairs Ministry would give the public more details on how the measure would be implemented, he said.

PLN President Director Fahmi Mochtar said the planned switch in weekly operation time was mainly aimed at reducing the company's power burden and this would eventually cut subsidy.

"Frankly speaking, PT PLN has difficulty giving incentives to industries willing to switch part of their weekly operation time to Saturdays and Sundays from Mondays and Fridays. If we give them incentives, this will not reduce but increase subsidy," he said.

The PLN president director said last Friday the company had until now been having an electricity deficit of 600 MW per day or about 3,000 MW per week. On the other hand, every Saturday and Sunday, it had an idle electricity supply capacity of 1,000 MW and 2,000 MW.

By changing industries' weekly days-off from Saturday and Sunday to Friday and Monday, the idle capacity could be used to cover the shortfall in power supply, he said.
