BMA starts 'No bag, no baht' scheme Saturday

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) - Bangkok City Hall will launch its "No bag, No baht" project to reduce the use of plastic bags in Bangkok, starting Saturday, according to a deputy Bangkok governor.

The "No bag, No baht" project aims to raise awareness and build conservation behaviour among the public. It will start at Bangkok's Jatujak Weekend Market as a pilot project, initally for a two-month trial period. The result and feedback of the scheme will be evaluated for further implementation in leading department stores in the capital.

Following a meeting with executives of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on its "Clean Bangkok without Plastic Bags" scheme, Porntep Techapaibul, deputy governor, said that due to the high quantity of plastic bags used--reaching 600,000 per day--City Hall spends over Bt600 million to dispose of such garbage.

Consequently, it has discussed with public and private agencies to conduct the "No bag No baht" project, set to launch May 15, to offer a one baht discount for customers carrying their own cloth bags and buying goods of at least Bt100, and to charge them one baht extra if they need a plastic bag for their purchases.

Some 5,000 to 8,000 shops in Jatujak are willingly participating in the project Saturday, according to Mr Porntep. Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra will preside over the "No bag No baht" project's opening ceremony in the afternoon and will give away 5,000 cloth bags and flyers to customers in order to promote the scheme at the market.
