CA urges BIMSTEC to tackle challenges of price hike, global warming, climate
DHAKA, Bangladesh , July 10 (BSS)-Chief Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed today called upon the BIMSTEC ministers to actively consider the impacts of climate change, global warming and recent price hike of food and energy on poverty to tackle these challengescollectively.
"Developed nations should come forward along with the BIMSTEC member countries to successfully overcome these issues"he added.
Dr Fakhruddin said this while inaugurating the first BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) ministerial meeting on 'PovertyAlleviation' at Sonargaon Hotel here.
BIMSTEC groups Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, SriLanka, Myanmar and Thailand and started its journey in 1997.
Finance and Planning Adviser Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam chaired the opening session while Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury spoke on the occasion. Planning Secretary Jafar AhmedChowdhury in his speech welcomed the guests.
BIMSTEC ministers and high officials, advisers of the caretaker government, special assistants to the Chief Adviser,diplomats and senior officials were present.
BSS/1300gmt BSS-02 EXPORT-BANGLADESH Export rises by 15.33 pc during 11 months DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 9 (BSS) - The country's total exports rose by 15.33 per cent during the 11 months of the last fiscal yearcompared to the corresponding period of the previous one.
According to a report published by Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) here today, the total export earnings stood at 12,639 million US dollars during the period which is lower than thetarget of 14,500 million US dollars set for the period.
The export earning in the month of May 2008 was recorded at 1270 million US dollars compared to 1044 million US dollars inMay 2007- a rise by 21.59 per cent.
The higher growth of export was possible due to increased exports of knitwear, woven, agricultural products, home textiles, leather, petroleum products, shoes, raw jute, tea, ceramic goods, frozen foods, electronics, terry towels, textile fabrics, andother industrial items, the report said.
Meanwhile, the export price index has increased by 0.69 per cent and the volume of export increased by 14.64 per cent duringthe period.
The price index of primary products increased by 11.52 percent and industrial products dropped by 0.09 per cent.
The volume of exports of industrial products increased by15.13 per cent during the period.
