RI STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF REALIZING G-8 SUMMIT COMMITMENT

Toyako, Hokkaido, July 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon that the ministers of countries attending a G-8 summit needed to hold a meeting to follow up the commitment their leaders had reached in the G-8 summit here.

"The ministers of G-8 countries and eight other nations attending the summit needed to meet to follow up the commitment their leaders have reached in the Hokkaido summit," the president was quoted by his spokesman Dino Patti Djalal as saying here on Wednesday.

He said that the president was of the view that the ministerial level meeting needed to be held soon so that what had been achieved in the summit would not serve as a mere commitment.

The president and Ban Ki-Moon in their bilateral meeting discussed efforts on how to cope with environment problems and climate change and on how to encourage parties in making the Bali Road Map effective and in carrying out the commitment of the Kyoto Protocol before the convention ends in 2012.

According to Dino, Ban Ki-Moon concurred with Yudhoyono on the need to keep the momentum of the Bali Road Map and its implementation. Various related international agreements were expected to be realized by 2009, three years before the Kyoto Protocol ends.

"What has been achieved together should be implemented on time and on the right tract," he was quoted as saying.

The UN secretary general also hoped that the adaptation fund program would also be realized soon. Advanced states should provide funds for climate change handling in developing nations.

Ban Ki-Moon also praised the cooperation between Indonesia and Australia on carbon trade and forest management.

In principle, the G-8 commitment in Hokkaido contained an agreement between developed and developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build closer international cooperation on food resilience and energy security.
