PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO CALLS ON D-8 COUNTRIES TO STEP UP TRADE, PARTNERSHIPS
Kuala Lumpur, July 8 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Developing Eight (D-8) countries should step up their trade relations and partnerships, building on the potentials of their collective market of 900 million people, in the face of the current global crisis.
"We must reduce the disparities existing among D-8 member countries and then step up our trade relations and also strengthen the partnerships among ourselves," President Yudhoyono said in his speech at the D-8 summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday.
Yudhoyono delivered the speech in his capacity as D-8 chairman for the 2006-2008 period, and then handed the chairmanship to Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the 2008-2010 period.
To face the food and energy crisis, Yudhoyono said D-8 countries should be more proactive and innovative in their programs and activities.
Yudhoyono said the more than 900 million people living in D-8 countries were an enormous market for their products and offering a multitude of business opportunities.
Therefore, he added D-8 countries should strengthen their private sectors.
"We have to create opportunities for our traders and businessmen to do business for mutual benefit," Yudhoyono said.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who will lead the D-8 for the next two years said the D-8 summit this time in Kuala Lumpur was facing a world economic problem because of unprecedented surges in the world oil price.
"Global oil prices are predicted to rise to US$170 per barrel at the end of this year and will continue to edge up to US$200 per barrel next year," Badawi said.
Present at the D-8 summit were also among others President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Pakistan's Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Egyptian International Cooperation Minister Fayza Mohamed Abdoul Naga.
Established in Istambul, Turkey, on June 15, 1997, the group is made up of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
The objectives of D-8 are to improve developing countries' positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.
The main areas of cooperation include finance, banking, rural development, science and technology, humanitarian development, agriculture, energy, environment, and health.
