SUMMIT OF WORLD RELIGIOUS LEADERS KICKS OFF IN BAKU, AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENT ATTENDS OPENING CEREMONY

Baku, April 26 (AzerTAc). A summit of world religious leaders has kicked off in Azerbaijan`s capital Baku.
President Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva have attended the opening of the summit which brings together nearly 250 delegates from 35 countries.
The event is organized by the CIS Interreligious Council, the largest organization in the post-Soviet space dealing with relations between people of different religious traditions.
The two-day summit will feature discussions on a wide range of issues, including giving impetus to interfaith dialogue, establishing global peace, eliminating existing threats such as terrorism and extremism, as well as the world economic crisis.
The participants are expected to adopt an official document which will outline priorities to ensure spiritual development of the world religions and mankind.
The Azerbaijani leader made remarks at the summit`s opening ceremony.
Russia`s Ambassador Vladimir Dorokhin read out a congratulatory letter of President Dmitry Medvedev.
Head of the Caucasian Muslims` Office Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazadeh and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia delivered speeches at the summit.
