AIBA CHIEF GIVES PRESS CONFERENCE IN BAKU

Baku. April 25, (AzerTAc). President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Ching-Kuo Wu has today given a press conference in Azerbaijan`s capital which is hosting the AIBA Youth World Championships.
Ching-Kuo Wu said AIBA decided to choose Baku as the venue for the youth world championships in recognition of Azerbaijan`s previous successes in organizing important boxing tournaments.
“Last year the Azeri capital hosted the AIBA President`s Cup tournament. Given the fact the competition was very well organized by the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation, we decided to give the right to host the current youth world championships to Azerbaijan.”
The AIBA chief stressed the importance of the Baku championships, saying it was the only qualification tournament for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Ching-Kuo Wu also praised what the Azerbaijani Boxing Federation had been doing under the Road to Baku program aimed at helping boxers from poor countries to participate in the youth world championships.
Aghajan Abiyev, first vice-president of Azerbaijan`s Boxing Federation, said boxing was one of the most popular kinds of sports in the country.
He expressed confidence the Baku championship would mark “outstanding success” for Azeri boxers.
The AIBA Youth World Championships is taking place from April 25 to May 4.
The championships feature contest in 11 weight categories: 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg, 91+kg.
