More airports to be built and improved in northern Laos

VIENTIANE 23 APRIL (KPL) - Feasibility studies are being conducted for the possibility of constructing new airports and improving the existing ones in northern provinces.
This is to improve air transportation and boost tourism in northern Laos, according to Director of the Civil Aviation Department, Mr. Yakua Lopangkao.
“We are cooperating with international organisations on conducting the feasibility studies on the construction and improvement of airports in northern provinces, such as Xiengkhouang, Houaphanh and Bokeo,” said early this month Mr. Yakua.
“We are at the stage of feasibility study on the possibility of construction and improvement and once the studies are complete our next step is to finalise plan for further submission to the government for consideration and seek financial assistance,” said Mr. Yakua.
Not in the long future, the Plain of Jars in Xiengkhouang will be concluded in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list and then Xiengkhouang will be another key tourist destination in the country. Meanwhile Houaphanh is well-known for its historic tourist sites, most of which are involved in the prolonged history of Lao people’s fighting against foreign aggressors, according to Mr. Yakua.
The director went on that Bokeo was playing an important role in the region in term of land transport due to the development of Road R3 and the ongoing Lao-Thai Mekong Bridge. Its tourist sites in Tonpheung district and these factors would help the province attract more visitors to the province. The government with some financial loans from foreign countries have invested billions of kip in projects to improve five airports of Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet, Champassak and Luang Namtha.
Once Pakse Airport has been improved it will be able to support 150-seat aircrafts like Boeing 737s and Airbus 320s, said Mr. Yakua. “Luang Prabang airport is being improved to accommodate 400-seat aircrafts and its USD 84-million improvement is projected to complete in 2013,” added Mr. Yakua.
