No justification to pressure Iran on n-program: Pakistani Expert

Islamabad, April 25, IRNA -- Syed Qandil Abbas, Professor of International Relations in International Islamic University on Saturday said that the pressure on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program is unjustified and the West must change its policies toward Tehran.

Talking to IRNA, he said that Iran being signatory of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means.

“Iran should be allowed to develop its nuclear program to meet its energy demands”, the scholar viewed.

The US and west have been suspecting on Iran’s nuclear program saying that Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb, which Iran has strongly denied.

Lashing out at the role of west on Iran’s nuclear program, Syed Qandil Abbas said that western countries and Israel are afraid of Iran’s progress and prosperity that is why they have been repeatedly questioning the credibility of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

The intellectual opined that there are many countries in the world who have not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), yet US is providing assistance to their nuclear programs.

He said that Iran has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and following the international law regarding its nuclear program.

“Iran’s nuclear program is going on under the supervision of the IAEA”, Syed Qandil Abbas noted.

He said that according to the evidence available Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and its aims and objectives are not to develop nuclear weapons.

Syed Qandil Abbas stated that the idea of imposing sanctions on Iran is not viable. “You cannot pressurize Iran”, he believed.

The scholar expressing his views said that it would be height of irresponsibility on the part of US authorities to talk of war on Iran when Iraq adventure had abysmally failed, and the war in Afghanistan was not succeeding either.

The intellectual said that attack on Iran will undermine American interest in the whole region and will give rise to anti-American sentiments.

He opined that the strategy of pressurizing and coercion rarely produce desired results.

Syed Qandil Abbas said the United States and Israel would not succeed in the soft war against Iran. “US will fail to accomplish its evil designs against Iran”, he said.

He added that Islamic Revolution has been surviving for last 30 years despite western propaganda.

Iran has faced three sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment activities but Iran, a leading OPEC oil producer, denies it is seeking nuclear weapons and says it aims to provide energy for its growing population when its reserves of fossil fuels run out./end
