M'SIAN INVESTORS ASK RI TO OVERCOME PROBLEMS AFFECTING THEIR PROJECTS
Kuala Lumpur, July 7 (ANTARA) - Some Malaysian investors have called on the Indonesian government to help them overcome problems hampering their investment projects in Indonesia, Indonesia's chief investment official said.
The Malaysian investors among other things asked the Indonesian government to let various agencies handling investment projects coordinate with each other more closely, the head of the Capital Investment Coordination Board (BKPM), M Luthfi, said aftet attending a meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Malaysian investors here Monday.
"One investor, Perusahaan MTD Capital which has a project to build a tollroad, complained about problems to free the land (for the project). They called on the government to have a coordination team involving various departments to solve the problem," he said.
Responding to the complaint, President Yudhoyono asked Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto to help solve the problem.
"The minister said, he would go to Cirebon for the Palimanan-Cibitung tollroad project so that the problem could be solved and the 400-square meter of land involved can be freed," he said.
The President also held a meeting with Plus Expressway Berhad which manages Malaysian tollroads with a total length of 973 km and 1,100 tollroads throughout the world.
"In Indonesia, Plus Express has signed a contract to build the 116-km Cikampek-Palimanan tollroad with an investment of Rp5.9 trillion and the Cimanggis-Cibitung tollroad with an investment of Rp3.1 trillion. In total, the company would invest Rp9 trillion to build more than 140 km of tollroads," he said.
MTD had invested in the building of the Cibitung - Cilincing tollroad.
Investment climateLuthfi called on stakeholders to create a favorable investment climate and overcome the problems in infrastructure.
"Problems in infrastructure such as (lack of) power has much affected investment projects. We are also trying to overcome the problem of traffic jams. During the past 10 years after the crisis, we spent little on infrastructure development," he said.
Expenditure on infrastructure during the period only reached 3.7 percent of GDP, compared to 7 percent of expenditure before the economic crisis.
"Among the strategic measures taken by the government are the program to build power plants with a combined capacity of 10,000 MW and so far we already provide 6,900 MW with a total investment of Rp5.6 billion," he added.
The benefit of the program could be enjoyed in 2009 or 2010, where state-run electricity company PT PLN could increase its efficiency and Indonesia would have a better competitiveness.
Also present at the meeting were Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda, Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Da'i Bachtiar, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) MS Hidayat.
