Iran-N.Korea to sign cultural exchange program pact
Beijing, April 22, IRNA – Iran and North Korea are scheduled to sign a cultural exchange program pact in Pyongyang during the visit of Ali Fat’hollahi, Deputy Foreign Minister in Asia and Oceania Affairs.
Fat’hollahi, who arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday for a two day visit, was received at the airport by Iran’s Ambassador to North Korea, Morteza Moradian and some Korean Foreign Ministry officials.
Fat’hollahi, on Wednesday night attended a dinner banquet given in his honor by his Korean counterpart Pak Gil Yon.
The two sides discussed issues of mutual concern over the supper.
Ambassador Moradian told IRNA in Beijing that Moradian is scheduled to sign a cultural exchange program pact in Pyongyang that is renewed every year based on which the two countries’ cooperate in sports, media, cultural, library, universities, exhibitions, and cultural exchange programs.
North Korea has had political relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
In July 2007, Japanese newspapers reported that North Korea agreed to supply submarines to Iran as payment for outstanding government debts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Kim Yong Il during the latter’s visit to Tehran in May 2007 that "the Iranian government is interested in expansion of ties with North Korea in various political, economic and cultural, but not in military fields.
In November 2009, Iran announced that it was prepared to mediate in resolving the Korean peninsula crisis. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Iran welcomes mutual understanding and agreement between South and North Korea in the direction of peace and stability.
Kim Yong-Nam, president of North Korea's Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), will visit Iran in the summer, IRNA had reported on Tuesday.
"This high-ranking official is expected to visit in two or three months," Iranian foreign ministry's Asia affairs head Mohammad Ali Fat’hollahi told IRNA.
He did not provide details of the visit, but Yong-Nam's trip assumes significance as Iran and North Korea have been close partners in economic, cultural and scientific fields for over three decades now./end
