Iran appointed dy.head for Organization of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

Berlin, April 22, IRNA – Executive Council of Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons here at its 60th gathering unanimously voted for appointing Iran as its deputy head.

The representatives of the governments at Berlin based international organization whose 60th general assembly was held in Hague elected the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassador to Holland and Iran’s permanent ambassador as the deputy head of agency’s executive council.

The Executive Council of the OPCW has 41 members, including Iran, and is one of the important policy maker organs of the organization.

Keeping in mind that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been one of the greatest victims of chemical weapons, the Iranian delegation to the organization has always been one of the most active ones.

The most important current issue at the OPCW is total annihilation of the chemical weapons, which according to the related international convention needs to be completed by April 29th, 2012.

That is while the United States has stockpiled the largest amount of chemical weapons in the world and is unlikely to annihilate all of them by the appointed deadline.

The issue is another broad violation of the international commitments of that world power./end
