Hatoyama, Shirakawa to Discuss Ways to Overcome Deflation

Tokyo, April 9 (Jiji Press)--Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Bank
of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa are slated to meet on Friday to discuss
ways to overcome deflation in the country.
They are expected to reconfirm that the government and the central
bank will continue joint efforts to fight deflation, sources said.
After meeting with Shirakawa in December, Hatoyama said that the
two sides would hold talks as necessary when there are changes in the
economic situation. The government declared in its economic assessment
report in November that Japan is in a mild state of deflation.
Friday's meeting comes as the fiscal 2010 state budget and bills to
launch a new child allowance program and scrap public high school tuition
fees, both key election promises of Hatoyama's ruling Democratic Party of
Japan, were enacted by the March 31 end of fiscal 2009.
Meanwhile, the BOJ slightly raised its economic assessment on
Wednesday, saying that "Japan's economy has been picking up."
Hatoyama has told a parliamentary meeting that the government will
make utmost efforts to overcome deflation in cooperation with the BOJ.
