Pakistan peaceful country, has no intention to enter into arms race in the region

Karachi, July 3 PPI: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has reiterated that Pakistan is a peaceful country and has no intention to enter into an arms race in the region.
``We will, however, maintain a minimum credible deterrence to ensure peace in the region and also to ensure that ongoing process of country's economic development remains uninterrupted,'' he said while addressing Naval parade Thursday in port city of Karachi.
Prime Minister felt sovereignty and integrity of the country could be well protected when ``our foreign and national security policies reflect aspirations of people. While subscribing to international obligations, Pakistan desires to promote its
national interests; as we believe in peaceful co-existance and mutual respect.''
He said defence needs will always remain a priority. ``Our government will provide all necessary resources to the armed forces to enable them modernize and stay in a state of readiness.''
Pakistan has been blessed by Allah Almighty with a unique geo-strategic position; it is located at confluence of three important regions - Middle East, Central Asia & South Asia. The geo-strategic importance is further enhanced due to its opening to oil rich Arabian Gulf which is world's energy highway.
Gilani stressed need to realize full potential of Pakistan's maritime sector which by virtue of long coastline and vast Exclusive Economic Zone including extended continential shelf offers immense opportunities towards sustainable economic growth.
``We must not forget that our strategic location can only be exploited to our advantage by developing this vital sector.''
The government will continue to meet requirements of Navy in all respect. Recent acquisition of modern platforms, equipment and weapons is indication of resolve to better equip Navy. Advances in modern technology taking place at fast pace are cost intensive. ``We must endeavour to achieve self reliance, promote indigenization and
pursue it with greater vigor than ever before.''
Pakistan has been in forefront of international war on terror.
``Being a victim of terrorism ourselves, we condemn terrorism and committed to defeat it. We believe in promoting peace, security in region and world at large. We also believe in freedom of seas and trade.
``We stand committed to international order and stability; our participation in Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan CMCP reaffirms our strong commitment to regional and global security. Navy's participation in CMCP enhanced its professional acumen, greatly helped in deterring terrorists, checking arms, drugs, human smuggling;
thereby, providing safe environment for smooth maritime economic activity in the country.''
