Japan grants US$ 223,000 for infrastructure development in Sanasomboune

VIENTIANE MACH 18 (KPL) - The Government of Japan has granted more than US$ 223,300 to Sanasomboune district to finance three basic infrastructure development projects in the district, Champassak province.
These projects are the construction of one bridge and one earth-paved road and one hospital for Sanasomboune district, Champassak province. The assistance is under the Grant Assistance Scheme for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
The agreement on the grant assistance was signed here yesterday. The signatories to the document were Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR, Mr. Masaaki Miyashita, and Deputy Chief of Sanasomboune district, Mr. Phaivanh Chomchanta.
“The construction of the three projects will start this month and is expected to be completed by the end of this year,” confirmed Director of Champassak Construction Company, Mr. Souvannalad Phasouk.
Mr. Phaivanh said that the construction of the earth-paved road accessing Nasone village in Sanasomboune district is 2.3 km long and six metres wide and this project costs more than US$48,400. People in Nasone village and its five neighbours would be able to communicate round the year unlike in the past as the communication was possible only in dry season.
The road would facilitate goods transportation, communication and a better access to education, marketplace and healthcare facilities, which will significantly improve the livelihoods of local people, he said. According to Mr. Phaivanh, the construction of the bridge along the road in Nasone, which is 300 metres long and three metres wide, costs more than US$81,700.
He said that the construction of the hospital in Sanasomboun district costs more than US$93,100.
With the development of the hospital, people in 44 villages in the district will gain an access to healthcare service.
For years people in these villages have travelled a long haul to receive medical service at the Champassak Province Hospital, which is 24 km away from their villages and they have to travel on poor condition road, said Mr. Phaivanh. Mr. Phaivanh expressed thanks to the government of Japan for its generous assistance and hoped that the Japanese government would provide more assistance to his district in the future.
