No consensus reached at G5+1 over sanctioning Iran

Tehran, March 8, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mihman-Parast said Sunday that the group 5+1 would reach no consensus on sanctioning Iran.

“Reaching a consensus at the Group 5+1 over imposing new sanctions on Iran would not easily be possible,” the spokesman said, commenting on the existing disagreement among the G5+1 member states over Iran.

US and other Western powers urged China and Russia to approve a proposed United Nations resolution imposing new sanctions on Iran.

However, Beijing and Moscow have, so far, resisted calls for harsh sanctions against Iran calling them useless means to solve Iran’s standoff with the West over the former’s peaceful nuclear program.

Referring to Britain’s recent accusations against Iran about the country's alleged interference in Iraq’s internal affairs including its parliamentary election which started Sunday morning, Mihman-Parast said Iran has repeatedly announced that “Iraqis are politically matured enough and do not need anyone to determine their own destiny.”

He stressed that the people of Iraq needed no interference of any foreign countries.

Elswhere, Mihman-Parast criticized the recent move of the Italian government on arresting Iranian nationals in Rome.

He noted that arresting Iranian nationals in Italy took place in line with a new policy made by Washington to cause problems for Iranians in other countries.

Mihman-Parast referred to that policy as a US-made “hypocritical and fabricated scenario” which was made by Washington to put other countries under pressure.

He stressed that Tehran has urged Rome to “immediately release” the Iranian nationals./end
