MP: Womens progress in Iran, eye-catching

New York, United Nations, March 3, IRNA – Iranian parliamentarian Ms. Tayebe Safaee said that the active role of women in the development of today’s Iran cannot be denied.

Safaee was addressing a meeting of Inter-Parliamentary Union at the United Nations on Tuesday.

In her speech titled ‘Women in Parliaments, First Step to Progress’, Safaee said the policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran on women are taken from the Constitutional Law and the Islamic teachings.

She added the Government of Iran is trying to give special attention to the women rights.

“Promotion of the role of women in any society requires conditions so that they can participate in affairs.”

“For this purpose,” Safaee said, “ the necessary security for the constructive presence of women in economic, political, social, and cultural fields should be provided.”

“In the Islamic Republic of Iran, women have achieved their dignity and self-confidence in a way that 25 percent of university professors are now women,” she said.

Safaee proposed that membership of women in the city and village councils be encouraged since it could increase their active participation in society.

She noted that out of 6,000 members of city and village councils in Iran, 1,491 are women./end
