Iran favors petrochemical co-op with D8

Tehran, Feb 28, IRNA – Iran will seek a new chapter of cooperation with D8 Muslim countries in the field of petrochemical in the upcoming summit of D8 slated for March 2.

Announcing this, the head of Petrochemical Panel of D8 Industry Ministers Summit, Yousef Mosafer expressed hope that the country will attract investments in its petrochemical industry during a workshop to be held on the sidelines of the event.

Given its huge potential for exporting petrochemical products, Iran is prepared to meet the needs of the D8 countries in the field of polymers, chemicals, aromatics and fertilizers, he said.

He also voiced Iran’s readiness to cooperate with the countries in field of petrochemical researches.

“During the workshop, we will propose establishing a network to inform the countries of one another’s technical knowledge, technological issues and marketing,” Mosafer noted.

D8 is a group of developing countries with large Muslim population that have formed an economic development alliance. It consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

D8 was founded by Necmettin Erbakan, the former Turkish prime minister and Islamist. The group was established after an announcement in Istanbul, Turkey on June 15, 1997.

D8 is composed of three bodies: the Summit, the Council and the Commission. The Summit, which is convened every two years, has the highest level of authority, and is composed of the heads of member states.

The Council is the principle decision making body and forum for consideration of issues relating to the D8, and is composed of the foreign affairs ministers of member countries.

The Commission has executive authority, and is composed of Commissioners appointed by governments of member states./end
