Japanese fine art prints to go on display in Tehran

TEHRAN, Feb. 18 (MNA) -- A collection of ukiyo-e, a form of Japanese traditional art prints, is scheduled to be put on display in an exhibition at Tehran’s Saba Art and Cultural Institute.

The collection belongs to Iranian collectors Jahangir Kazeruni and Ferial Salahshur. A book comprised of articles on ukiyo-e will be introduced during the opening ceremony of the exhibit on February 20.

The two-week show to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Iranian and Japanese diplomatic relations has been jointly organized by the Cultural and Information Section of the Embassy of Japan in Tehran, Tehran’s Dey Gallery, and the Art Research Center of the Iranian Academy of Arts.

Ukiyo-e, which means “pictures of the floating world”, is one of the most important genres of art of the Tokugawa period (1603–1867) in Japan, the Encyclopedia Britannica says.

The style is a mixture of the realistic narrative of the emaki (“picture scrolls”) produced in the Kamakura period and the mature decorative style of the Momoyama and Tokugawa periods. The ukiyo-e style also has something of both native and foreign realism about it.
