80% of Iran’s mineral resources untapped

TEHRAN, Feb. 17 (MNA) – Iran's deputy industries and mines minister said that 80 percent of the country's mineral resources have not been discovered yet.

Mohammad-Masoud Samieinejad stated that currently 20 percent of the country’s mineral resources have been discovered and the development of these resources requires an increase in the national budget.

Last Iranian calendar year (March 2008-2009) 237 million tons of minerals were excavated in the country, he said.

The Iranian official pointed out that Iran has 57 billion tons of resources and should extract 570 million tons a year and in this regard the country is not up to par with international standards.

Samieinejad stated that the ministry plans to develop mines next year by increasing the excavation budget.

He noted that new resources have been discovered in Iran and the infrastructure needed for developing the mines is being implemented.

He concluded that in order to develop mines it is necessary to build roads and supply water and power to encourage the private sector to invest in these fields.
