Iran far from standards of national museums: official

TEHRAN, Feb. 8 (MNA) -- Iran is far from the ideal standard of a national museum, said Director of the Iranian National Committee for ICOM (the International Council of Museums) Ahmad Mohit-Tabatabaii.

“The national museum is a place where the cultural identity of a nation is put on display, but we still have a long way to go to achieve a world-class national museum in this country,” he added.

“Cultural identity carries the relationship of a nation with the land on which its people live and all that they have achieved throughout the years. These achievements encompass a wide range of arts, traditions, customs and historical sites,” he remarked.

“We are an ancient nation rich in culture and we need to portray this well through good programming and careful management,” he stated.

ICOM defines a museum as a place where part of the historical and cultural identity of a nation is preserved and where people would be free to come and visit, Mohit-Tabatabaii described.

“The current National Museum of Iran was established in 1937 in Tehran. It is the one museum where our heritage dating from pre-history until the Islamic era is on display,” he explained.
