Iran: 20% uranium enrichment, fuel swap, two separate issues

Tehran, Feb 7, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mihman-Parast said on Sunday that 20 percent uranium enrichment in Iran and fuel swap deal are two separate issues.

“President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s order to start 20 percent uranium enrichment is quite natural. That has nothing to do with Iran’s agreement to fuel swap,” Mihman-Parast told IRNA.

Mihman-Parast said, “We had formerly said that providing fuel for Tehran medical reactor will be possible in three ways: Purchase, exchange and production inside the country. Opting for one of the three choices will not mean putting aside the other ones. Even we can follow up all the three choices simultaneously.”

He said the need for nuclear fuel will be something ordinary for majority of states in the future.

He pointed to the growing need to nuclear fuel worldwide and said that moving towards production of the fuel, especially by the IAEA members, will be something quite natural.

Mihman-Parast said that that production of the 20 percent enriched uranium is among Iran’s rights, being considered as a peaceful nuclear activity.

Iran moves towards 20 percent enrichment under the IAEA supervision, he added.

More than 180 hospitals inside Iran use pharmaceutical products yielded by Tehran Research Reactor, said the official.

Meantime in the exclusive interview, Mihman-Parast said that the Iranian government is responsible to implement the 20-Year Vision Plan for Economic, Cultural and Social Development (2005-2025) which envisaged setting up 20 nuclear power plants to generate 20,0000 megawatts of nuclear power.

“So, in the future, our need to nuclear fuel will exceed the current quantity and we should use all possible means to produce it ourselves.”/end
