AZERI MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TO BE DISCUSSED AT COE CONGRESS
Baku, January 31 (AzerTAc). Municipal elections held in Azerbaijan last December will be among top issues on the agenda of the 18th Plenary Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to take place in Strasbourg from 17 to 19 March.
Other issues on the agenda will include debates on territorial democracy in Iceland, Portugal, Switzerland and Albania.
According to the Council of Europe`s website, congress members will also discuss the role of local and regional authorities in the implementation of human rights and the Utrecht Declaration on good local and regional governance. In addition, they will examine Recommendations and Resolutions to be adopted on the following issues: climate change, North-South co-operation, minority languages, intra-regional transport, gender equality and integration of young people.
The session will also feature remarks by Thorbjorn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of the Committee of Ministers for Switzerland, Gerhard Stahl, Secretary General of the EU Committee of Regions, as well as Mevlut Cavusoglu, new President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
