Iran FM holds meetings in Davos

TEHRAN, Jan. 30 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki is currently in Davos, Switzerland to represent Iran at the World Economic Forum meeting.

On the sidelines of the gathering, Mottaki met Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and a number of other political figures.

During his meeting with Calmy-Rey on Friday morning, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran is ready to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to reach an agreement for procuring fuel for the Tehran research reactor.

This proposal is a gesture of goodwill by Iran and should be regarded as an opportunity to build trust, he noted.

He also stated that Switzerland has an important place in Iran’s foreign policy, especially with regard to energy issues.

Calmy-Rey underlined the important role Tehran plays in the region.

The two foreign ministers also called for the expansion of cooperation between Iran and Switzerland.

During a meeting with the Brazilian foreign minister on Friday, Mottaki stated that some new proposals have been discussed in regard to obtaining fuel for the Tehran research reactor and said he is optimistic that there will be a positive outcome.

He went on to say that all the signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty are entitled to access nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes.

Commenting on the proposal for a fuel swap for the Tehran research reactor, he said the issue is separate from Iran’s other nuclear activities but added that Tehran will continue its cooperation with the IAEA.

However, no country should expect Iran to relinquish its right to nuclear technology, he noted.

Mottaki pointed out that Iran’s nuclear fuel swap counterproposal is a confidence-building measure and it is still on the table.

Commenting on the U.S. president’s views about the establishment of relations with Tehran, he said that slogans should give way to actions.

“We hope that these slogans… are put into practice,” he stated.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday night, Mottaki emphasized the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and said that Tehran has always cooperated closely with the IAEA.

The Iranian foreign minister also held talks with former UN secretary general Kofi Annan on Thursday in which they exchanged views on important issues related to Africa, Afghanistan, and the Middle East.

Mottaki and Annan also discussed Tehran’s role in resolving the conflicts in Iraq and Yemen and called for an increase in interactions between Iran and African countries to expand their economic cooperation.

Mottaki also met with International Committee of the Red Cross President Jacob Kellenberger on Friday to discuss the Red Cross missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Red Cross plays a crucial role in dealing with the humanitarian crises in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Iran is keen to expand its cooperation with the organization, he added.

And Iran would like to see a Red Cross regional office opened in Tehran, he said.
